Choosing Colors

The colors you choose for your Website are an important consideration too. Just as the content is important the colors can determine how a visitor views your site. The colors you pick will determine the mood and emotions of visitors, which reflects your image branding and identity. Colors can change reaction, change actions, and sway a persons thinking. Colors can also soothe your eyes or irritate them, raise your blood pressure and even suppress your appetite.

Colors will affect the mood of your visitors, and you will want the proper mood set that is right for the content of your site. The primary way to set the mood is with color, so it pays to be selective when deciding to get great color. Your choice of colors will determine how your site is responded to and in some cases whether it is revisited. A couple examples of the emotions conveyed by colors:

Red – conveys excitement, speed, energy, importance, and danger.
Blue – conveys warmth, calm, honesty, and contentment.
Green – conveys fertility, money, growth, and warmth.
Yellow – conveys spring, light, bright, and cheap.
White – conveys clean and uncluttered.

As you can see colors play an important role in setting the mood and send a message to the visitor. Colors provide a powerful means of communication by creating a universal message which can cause reactions you need to achieve.

Once the colors are determined they need to be carried consistently through out the site, creating visual unity. The result will be a unified polished look that conveys the proper mood for your Website.
